Educational Programs That Work - 1995

Past Is Prologue

Past Is Prologue. A program teaching elementary students the procedures involved in operating a democratic government. Approved by the JDRP for students, grades K-6. Also used with students in middle and high schools (6-12).

Description Approved for K-6 in critical thinking and governance. Past Is Prologue uses three Native American Learning Stories from an Iroquois tradition, along with a Teacher's Guide. Students will learn how to effectively gather information, make clear decisions, and develop group consensus. The story Who Speaks for Wolf presents the multilevel concepts of the decision-making system of a democratic government. The Native American setting captures the interest of the young and involves them in the learning process. Teachers report enhanced listening and discussion skills and increased respect for each other and for other cultures. This program has been identified as meeting National Goal for Educational 3. Teachers report materials are equally effective with gifted, average, and disadvantaged students, and work well in the heterogenous and multicultural classroom. Well suited for use in an integrated curriculum as the thinking skills encouraged by Past Is Prologue relate to several elements. Each trainee must have both books, Who Speaks for Wolf and the Teacher's Guide ($24 per set)*. An audio cassette is also available ($15)*. Cost of personnel training is $450 - $900 per day plus transportation costs for a certified trainer. Awareness materials are available at no cost. Program site visits to model schools are welcomed, by appointment.

* Educational discount available on materials.
