This program addresses National Goals for Education 3 and 6 by encouraging students to develop the habit of reading and in doing so, improve reading and comprehension skills. This, in turn, broadens opportunities for students to use their minds well and be prepared for further learning. The program works to ensure that every child will become a literate adult American, able to develop skills necessary to compete in a future world economy and to exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Evidence of Effectiveness Participants demonstrated significant gains in reading achievement when compared with a control group study as measured by the CTBS Reading Test. They also displayed increases in recreational reading, scope of reading, increased family literacy activities, and a decrease in time spent watching television.
