| Teaching Research Integrated Preschool (TRIP) Model, The. A model for training staff to work with young children with special needs within typical early childhood settings. |
Description The Teaching Research Integrated Preschool (TRIP) Model merges current recommended practice in early childhood special education with developmentally appropriate practices and provides for the individualized instructional goals of children birth to age 6 with special needs. The Model addresses Goal 1 of the National Goals for Education by "ensuring access to high-quality and developmentally appropriate preschool programs that help prepare children for school." Individuals participating in the replication training will acquire knowledge and skills necessary to support children with disabilities within community programs where their typical peers are served. They will acquire the ability to use an environmentally-referenced assessment approach resulting in the selection of functional and environmentally relevant skills for each child. Techniques for incorporating parent participation in all aspects of their child's educational program are taught. Participants will learn how to individualize instructional sequences to the needs of each child and to teach them within naturally occurring group activities in which children with disabilities participate alongside their typically developing peers. Additional components of the model contained in the training include: activity based instruction, data based decision making, collaborative team functioning, and transition planning. Dissemination activities include awareness presentations, brochures and a program video. Replication training is packaged in three, four, and five day modules and is available at the Monmouth, Oregon site. Adopters are responsible for tuition and participant travel expenses. Typical recipients of project services include preschool/day care staff, Head Start staff, early childhood special education supervisors and practitioners including family specialists, and related service personnel.
