Audience PEP approved for all students K-12, including regular and ungraded classroom, Chapter 1, special education, at-risk, migrant, ESL, and after school programs for public and nonpublic school programs.

Description The goal of CLIMB Plus is to improve the performance of all students in reading, writing, study skills, and mathematics through the following components.

Curriculum framework, a coordinated program of instruction produced by teachers which includes:

• Planning Arrays. Identifies reading, study skills, and mathematic outcomes K-12.
  
• Writing Bank. Connects reading/writing/thinking and math skills to all content areas.
  
• Assessments. Provides ongoing information to assess student strengths and weaknesses through survey diagnostic and criterion referenced measures and a variety of performance based assessments incorporating portfolios.
  
• Simplified Record Keeping System. Monitors continuous student progress K-12. Available in a computerized format maining a complete history of students.
  
• Strategies. Combines skills and disciplines for an integrated, interdisciplinary approach.

Training, provides teachers with a systematic way to manage a student's instructional program in reading/writing and mathematics. Training includes:

• Use of the Curriculum Framework. A hands-on approach coordinating the CLIMB Plus framework into a school's materials, resources, objectives, and philosophy.
  
• Procedures for Classroom Management and Implementation. Teachers working collaboratively develop a classroom plan around the CLIMB Plus framework based on their materials, teaching style, and student needs and interests.
  
• Active Learning Strategies and Models. Mathematics-Congruent with NCTM Standards. Provides a hands-on approach moving from the concrete to linking to applied and mathematical problem solving. Reading/writing training integrated the CLIMB Plus framework into a whole language, literature-based, or basal approach. Training includes utilization of our Bank of Preparations for Instruction and writing strategies that go along with pieces of literature, themes, and content.
  
• Content Reading and Study Skills Strategies for all Disciplines.
  
• Follow-Up Training. Designed to meet the needs of adopting schools.

Management Design: Coordinates and Integrates Personnel, Materials, and Services.

• Provides a design for communication between classroom instruction and support services.
  
• Offers a system for coordination within and across grade levels and programs.
  
• Fosters a collaborative team approach to achieve instructional goals.
  
• Delineates roles for project coordination.

CLIMB Plus provides a means to tie together existing curriculum, textbooks, materials, goals and outcomes in a clear, concise program tailored to an individual school's needs. CLIMB Plus creates a cohesive curriculum framework for continuous student progress. The program addresses Goal 3 of the National Goals for Education.

Evidence of Effectiveness CLIMB Plus significantly increases and sustains the academic achievement of regular and compensatory education students in reading and mathematics, grades K-12, as measured by nationally recognized standardized achievement tests and as compared with national norms.

Requirements Teachers and administrators participate in training for effective utilization of CLIMB Plus curriculum and management design. Follow-up training sessions are recommended. Teachers must be supplied with the CLIMB Plus curriculum materials. The program can be adopted in reading/writing and/or mathematics at any or all grade levels and programs. CLIMB Plus can be implemented by a district, school, or a team of teachers.

Costs Start-up costs are approximately $85-$160 per classroom teacher for curriculum materials and supplies. Maintenance costs are minimal. Training costs are negotiable.

Services Awareness materials are available at no cost. Visitors are welcome at the Project site by appointment. Project staff are available to attend out-of-state awareness meetings. Implementation and follow-up services are available to adopters.
