Educational Programs That Work - 1995

Successful Inservice through Turnkey Education (SITE)

Successful Inservice through Turnkey Education (SITE). A mathematics program for the development of higher-level thinking skills through the use of manipulative materials. Approved for elementary school teachers and supervisors (grades 2-6) and students of these participants.

Description The Successful Inservice through Turnkey Education (SITE) program is based on a problem-solving approach to learning new mathematical concepts and skills. SITE integrates content and methodology, using hands-on activities with a variety of manipulatives. Since teachers " teach as they were taught,"the program uses processes and activities which are immediately applicable in the classroom, mesh with every textbook, and model the K-4 and the 5-8 NCTM Standards for Curriculum and Evaluation. Mathematics content (fractions, decimals, area, perimeter, volume, metric measure, graphing, geometry) is developed through a process approach (cooperative grouping, questioning strategies, guided discovery). SITE provides the printed instructional materials as well as the manipulatives needed in the classroom.

Effectiveness has been demonstrated in urban, suburban, and rural schools. Teachers' mathematical knowledge increases while enthusiasm and skill in teaching math is noticeably enhanced. Student growth in knowledge from pre- to posttest has been significant (at 0.05 level).

Initial training requires 3-5 full days. Periodic follow-up is recommended. Costs include: honorarium, travel, and per diem costs for SITE trainer(s); $95 per participant for workshop materials; one SITE Starter Kit for each adopting building ($415). First-level awareness materials are available at no cost.
