| Inservice (Promoting Positive Attitudes Toward Learning). An outcomes-based teacher inservice training program designed to help teachers increase the frequency of specific instruction behaviors and strategies which have been proven effective in increasing student growth in grades K-12. |
Description The basic Inservice approach is to influence teacher behavior, which, in turn, cause changes in student attitudes and behaviors. The mechanism for effecting teacher change is the use of multimedia, individualized, self-paced, outcome-based learning kits. The kits introduce sixteen specific teaching skills in three complementary areas. Each of the three kits--Classroom Communication and Management, Process of Learning, and Active Involvement -- follows the same general format. Teachers are presented a list of four to six outcome-based objectives. For each objective, numerous learning activities are provided, followed by an assessment. Debriefing after peer observation or a microteaching session is a key program aspect of the process. Kits come in notebook form containing all required materials except films and commercially available books.
Data indicate a significant student improvement in each of the following areas as a result of teachers' Inservice training: reading, vocabulary, verbal skills, respect for school and learning, and self-esteem. Teachers also report a greater sense of professional gratification and self-satisfaction after applying Inservice methods.
Two to four days of training are provided for persons selected as Inservice Peer Leaders. (These are primarily classroom teachers who have had particular success in implementing Inservice methods in their classrooms and have been certified to lead awareness and staff development sessions for colleagues across the nation.)
Awareness materials are available at no cost. Implementation costs include Inservice Kits and Peer Leaders' daily fees and travel costs.
Project staff and Peer Leaders are available for awareness sessions at professional meetings and conferences. Peer Leaders are also available to conduct training workshops.
Developmental Funding: USOE ESEA Title III.
