To meet critical teacher shortages in special education, mathematics, foreign language, English as a Second Language, and science, and shortages of minority teachers in all areas, this project offers seven options for teacher certification within an Alternative Route to Certification structure. Partnerships link the Kentucky Department of Education with four universities, including Kentucky's only Historically Black College/University, and four school districts. Recruitment is targeted at mid-career professionals, recent college graduates who did not major in education, and paraprofessionals. Recruits participate in a well-supervised, practical/clinical induction process, including mentor support, which extends to their third year of teaching. Plans call for the expansion of this effort to Kentucky's four eight-year institutions of higher education.
