2004 Teaching American History Grants Awarded
Over the next month, 122 Teaching American History grants will be announced locally to coincide with Independence Day and other summer celebrations. The grants, made by OII, support programs that raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history. (July 2)

Local newspapers have been writing news stories about the new Teaching American History projects.
To help pay for workshops for Rockford County, Illinois schoolteachers, the district has received a $1 million federal grant. The workshops, designed for teachers to "brush up" on traditional history knowledge, will cater primarily to fifth, eighth, and eleventh grade instructors. [More-Rockford Register] (July 2)
On July 1, Georgia Congressman Mac Collins announced that the Troup County School District will receive a $1 million grant, distributed over three years, to improve the teaching of civics and American history. Collins notes that the grant comes at a significant time, as the government asks young people to remember and defend American values, in this time of conflict in Iraq. [More-The Weekly] (July 1)
"Turning Points," Southern Oregon Education Service District's new federally funded Teaching American History project, will use its $2 million grant to create a prototype of web, print, and video materials for history teacher professional development. To combat "American Amnesia," or the idea that a collective American history no longer exists, the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center received two grants totaling $2 million. One of the grants will focus on "History in the Heartland," a program designed in collaboration with the Ohio Historical Society and Ohio State University. [More-Telegraph Forum] (June 30)
The American History Cowboy Coalition in Casper, WY, has received a Teaching American History grant. The nearly $1 million grant will be used for teacher training to encourage systematic change in the way U.S. history is taught and to develop a community of teacher and student historians who are more active citizens, according to Joel Dvorak, the district's associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
