Tips and Assistance

The Programs for Baccalaureate Degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Critical Foreign Languages, with Concurrent Teacher Certification (TCT-B) is a discretionary grant program that was authorized by the America Competes Act in August of 2007.

Program requirements: Grantees are required to:

Provide high-quality research, laboratory, or internship experiences;
Provide student teaching or other clinical classroom experiences that are integrated with coursework and lead to demonstration of effective teaching skills;
Include strategies for improving student literacy;
Encourage participants to teach in high-need schools and assist participants to obtain employment in such schools;
Offer training in the use of and integration of educational technology;
Collect data and evaluate the project's success;
Provide ongoing activities and services to graduates of the program who teach in elementary and secondary schools; and
Develop recommendations to improve the school, department, or program of education participating in the partnership.

Priority: Priority will be given to applicants whose primary focus is placing participants in high-need local education agencies.

The Programs for Masters Degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Critical Foreign Languages (TCT-M) is a discretionary grant program that was authorized by the America Competes Act in August of 2007.

Program requirements: Grantees are required to:

Promote effective teaching skills so that program participants become more effective science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or critical foreign language teachers;
Prepare teachers to assume leadership roles in their schools;
Provide high-quality research, laboratory, or internship experiences that are integrated with coursework;
Provide student teaching or other clinical classroom experiences;
Include strategies for improving student literacy;
Align the content knowledge in the master's degree programs with challenging student academic achievement standards and challenging academic content standards established by the State;
Encourage participation of underrepresented groups, members of the Armed Forces, and teachers teaching in high-need schools;
Create opportunities for enhanced and ongoing professional development; and
Evaluate and report on the impact of the program.

Period of Grant: Not to exceed five years.

Matching Requirement: Each eligible recipient that receives a grant under this part shall provide, from non-Federal sources, an amount equal to 50 percent of the amount of the grant (which may be provided in cash or in kind) to carry out the activities supported by the grant.

Supplement Not Supplant Provision: Grant funds provided under this part shall be used to supplement, and not supplant, other Federal or State funds.
