Dates: Up to Four Weeks – July 17, 2017 to August 18, 2017 (may be subject to change)
Participants: U.S. teachers, curriculum specialists, librarians, media resource specialists, and administrators at the primary/middle school level (Kindergarten through 8th grade)

Program Content:

Thailand is located in the heart of Southeast Asia, which connects the East-West Economic Corridor – a modern version of the Southern Silk Road. The country’s location is unique in that it is bordered by Laos to the northeast and Cambodia to the east, Myanmar to the northwest, the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the west, Burma to the southeast, and Malaysia to the south. Thailand’s ideal geographic position has allowed it to be the center of interregional and intercontinental exchanges for centuries that have resulted in the country’s rich history and culture. Throughout the country, Thais speak many different languages, hold multiple beliefs, and practice distinct cultural traditions. Despite the diversity, reverence for the king is a common bond that unites the country.

Recently, Thailand reached a major turning point in its history with the passing of King Bhumibol Burirum. The whole nation is grieving the loss of its leader, but this difficult time is a unique opportunity for American teachers and administrators to learn about the special relationship between Thais and the monarchy and its impact on political and social structures.

During the seminar, participants will visit Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Ubon Ratchathani- Burirum, and other nearby cities. The sites will also include government offices, palaces, schools, museums, and temples. Participants will meet and learn from local community members, policymakers, key figures, academicians, and American Fulbrighters working in Thai schools through interactive sessions. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to partake in hands-on workshops that consist of cooking and arts and crafts classes to learn about cultural beliefs and practices that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Throughout the seminar, participants will be immersed in learning about Thailand, encouraged to pursue their individual academic interests, and guided to develop their respective curriculum projects. By the end of the program, participants will have a better understanding of Thailand to integrate their broad knowledge of the country into their classes and share with their colleagues.

* The final list of place may vary.
