PROGRAM DESCRIPTON

Grants support LEAs in the development of community-wide approaches to creating safe and drugfree schools and promoting healthy childhood development. Programs are intended to prevent violence and the illegal use of drugs and to promote safety and discipline. LEAs are required to partner with local law enforcement, public mental health, and juvenile justice agencies/entities. This program is jointly funded and administered by the departments of Education, Justice, and Health and Human Services (the appropriation amounts listed above do not include funds appropriated for the departments of Justice, and Health and Human Services).


TYPES OF PROJECTS

To be funded, local comprehensive strategies must address the following six elements but may address other elements as well, as determined by the needs of the community:

  • Provide a safe school environment;
  • Offer alcohol-, other drug-, and violence-prevention activities and early intervention for troubled students;
  • Offer school and community mental health preventive and treatment intervention programs;
  • Offer early childhood psychosocial and emotional developmental programs;
  • Support and connect schools and communities; and
  • Support safe-school policies.
