The purpose of the Grants to Reduce Alcohol Abuse program is to provide resources for local educational agencies (LEAs) to develop and implement innovative and effective alcohol abuse prevention programs for secondary school students. Activities must include one or more proven strategies for reducing underage alcohol abuse as determined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Grantees must provide an explanation of how activities that are not part of a SAMHSA-approved program will be effective in reducing underage alcohol abuse.

ALABAMA

The project will implement the Too Good for Drugs and Violence (TGFDV) curriculum in the middle and high schools in the Hoover City Schools. The project will provide direct universal prevention programming that is currently absent in the school district. The project will provide parents with parenting information and will work to improve the quality of the peer helper programs that are already in place, thus providing positive peer influence.

It will implement three SAMHSA model programs – Project Towards No Drug Abuse, Project SUCCESS, and CMCA. The project will enhance and build on individual and environmental prevention programs already in place by increasing local capacity to provide early intervention services and facilitating linkages with needed referrals.

This project will utilize two SAMHSA models – the school-based Project SUCCESS and the community focused Communities Mobilizing for Change in Alcohol. The project will focus on reducing the incidence and frequency of alcohol use as well as reducing the availability of alcohol to minors. The target population of the project will be 9th through 12th graders at two high schools within the district.

OREGON

This project will use an evidence-based alcohol abuse prevention project to serve all eight middle schools in the district. The project will use the SAMHSA-approved model program, Project Northland, to provide services to all middle school students. Research-based family activities and community components will be included to increase project outcomes and help ensure sustainability. The project will partner with the Lane County Coalition to Prevent Substance Abuse with the goal of reducing risk factors and increasing community capacity.
