Better Education Is Everybody's Business

On August 27, 2000 through August 31, 2000, Secretary Riley's America Goes Back To School bus tour visited schools and local communities in the Mississippi Delta region. The Success Express stopped in towns along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois. (Both the map and itinerary pages link to the Web pages for each town visited. There you will find photos and information about each town's events.)

The bus tour is a yearly celebration sponsored by the Department's America Goes Back To School (AGBTS) initiative to support local, state and community involvement in school life.

Secretary Riley has committed the Department of Education to promoting educational opportunities in these areas in response to a call from the president and vice president to strengthen rural communities for the 21st century.

The Mississippi River towns that the secretary visited are some of the oldest in the United States. Many of the residents in the Mississippi Delta region have not experienced the economic boom of the past decade that the rest of the United States has been enjoying. During his visit to this area, Secretary Riley challenged local citizens to become more involved in their schools. Strong local support ensures strong local schools, and an educated citizenry is the first step to ensuring economic growth in the region.

We hope you will take a moment to explore our Web site and view the photos and information we posted as the Success Express traveled through the Mississippi Delta region.
