Secretary Riley and U.S. Representatives David Phelps and Jerry Costello spoke to over 200 young people and adults at a welcoming ceremony along the banks of the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois. Over 80 seventh graders from the local GEAR UP project - based at Shawnee Community College - were in attendance wearing GEAR UP T-shirts. Secretary Riley encouraged students in the audience to take algebra, geometry, and other challenging courses in middle and high school so they would possess the skills necessary to succeed in college.
