Vermont is engaged in the development of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary framework for curriculum and assessment designed to extend and refine the Common Core of Learning by significantly raising standards in three multidisciplinary strands: 1. History and the Social Sciences (fully funded by this grant); 2. Arts & Humanities (partially funded by this grant); and 3. Science, Mathematics, and Technology (not funded with this grant, but included in the overall project design).

During the first two years of the project, three commissions have worked to develop content standards and a description of essential learning experiences for Vermont's framework, and a Steering Committee has coordinated these efforts and directed the compilation of a second draft of the framework. A Statewide Assessment Committee has designed guidelines for assessment. An Outreach Committee has developed strategies for dissemination and implementation of the framework. The Vermont Professional Standards Board has developed a strategic plan that centers on the new student standards. Year Three builds on initial efforts by all of these groups, with a focus on:
