The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is collaborating with Oregon State University and Portland State University under the guidance of Oregon's Mathematics/Science/Technology Council to ensure that the project supports the state's agenda for improvement of mathematics and science programs for all students. The project will:
- Develop an effective, integrated, K-12 curriculum framework in mathematics and science that represents world-class standards and can be adapted and used by local school districts;
- Develop and implement model guidelines for effective approaches to teacher education, licensure and recertification based on the frameworks and tied to world-class standards;
- Design and pilot test two professional development programs for teachers based on the world-class standards and the integrated curriculum framework for mathematics and science; and
- Evaluate the collaborative model used for the development and implementation of the framework at the local school level.
Oregon's process will concentrate on integrating the framework for mathematics and science in recognition of the inter-dependency of the disciplines and on providing local schools with a unified focus for improving the quality of teaching and instruction in mathematics and science.
