The Statewide Frameworks for K-12 Mathematics and Science Education Project goals include: (1) to develop an effective model statewide framework for math and science education grades K-12 for adaption and use by local school districts; (2) to develop and implement model guidelines for teacher education, certification and recertification responsive to state curriculum frameworks; (3) to design and pilot test a model professional development program for teachers based on the curriculum framework; and (4) to evaluate the project annually.

Frameworks are needed to provide guidance to Nebraska's 1028 school systems and teachers to improve the quality of education for all students. As a local control state, Nebraska lacks a standard curriculum and subject area exit requirements.

A statewide advisory board will guide mathematics and science teams to develop frameworks and assessment guides. State appointed committees will collaborate with teacher preparation institutions to revise teacher certification and recertification requirements and pre-service education. Community awareness programs will promote the frameworks.

A teachers-teaching inservice model will connect the frameworks with effective innovative teaching practice and assessment strategies. The project will result in K-12 mathematics and science frameworks adopted by NDE, statewide support from local districts, and improvement of mathematics and science education for all Nebraska students.
