Nebraska Department of Education proposes to conduct a three-year project, Nebraska Curricular Framework in the Visual and Performing Arts. Project goals include:

  1. To build on the model of Prairie Visions: The Nebraska Consortium for Discipline-Based Art Education to develop an effective model statewide framework for K-12 visual and performing arts education for adaption and use by local school districts and to contribute to emerging national standards for excellence in arts education.
  2. To develop and implement model guidelines for teacher education, certification and recertification responsive to state curriculum frameworks.
  3. To design and pilot test a model professional development program for teachers based on the curriculum framework.
  4. To evaluate the project annually.

A statewide advisory board will guide visual and performing arts teams to develop frameworks and assessment guides. State appointed committees will collaborate with teacher preparation institutions to revise teacher certification and recertification requirements and pre-service education. Community awareness programs will promote the frameworks.

A teachers-teaching-teachers inservice model will connect the framework with effective innovative teaching practice and assessment strategies. The project has completed a K-12 visual and performing arts framework draft document.
