The Michigan Geography Framework Project has developed content standards in geography as part of the state's core academic curriculum and reform of education in the State of Michigan.

The need in Michigan is for a geographic framework which will meet or exceed national standards, be consistent with the Michigan Common Goals of Education, and be useful to teachers involved in school restructuring. The framework must also emphasize the ways geography supports and links with other disciplines and be accompanied by non-threatening ways of assessing learning standards which help teachers improve instruction.

The Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Geographic Alliance will develop and disseminate content standards and related support materials, including materials for parents. The Project will create performance-based assessment mechanisms to help teachers evaluate their instruction. The Michigan Geographic Alliance will provide a 24 day-long teacher workshops, two two-week summer institutes, and six one week summer teacher workshops on the framework. Six model programs will be developed in school districts. Central Michigan University will develop a model program in teacher education based on the framework, run four workshops on teacher preparation, and work with the Department of Education to revise teacher certification standards.
