The Louisiana Mathematics and Science Frameworks Project is a collaborative effort between the state Department of Education and the Louisiana Systemic Initiatives Program. The project will produce effective mathematics and science curricula and assessment frameworks that prepare both students and teachers for the 21st century. The frameworks will be developed and implemented within a statewide environment in which related reforms of professional development, preservice teacher education, certification, and recertification are already well underway or under consideration. The project is designed to reflect the direction of national mathematics and science reform.

World-class frameworks should be the policy bridge that consolidates preservice and inservice initiatives. Louisiana is one of two states soon to be implementing both a Statewide Systemic Initiative program and a teacher preparation collaborative. The frameworks developed in this project will also become integral parts of other initiatives, and concomitant reform will occur in K-12 and preservice education based on world-class standards.

Since the frameworks will serve as catalysts for pervasive and enduring systemic change, involvement and ownership by all stakeholders in education is mandatory for widespread acceptance. A deliberate component of the process will be the active involvement of significant numbers of classroom teachers at all levels of development and implementation. The process of developing the frameworks will focus the state on a common vision for mathematics and science education.

The quality of the framework documents will be closely monitored by both in-state and out-of- state reviewers. National consultants will review the documents for adherence to the national direction for reform. An in-state Equity Review Team will review the documents to assure that they are equitable for all students.
