The Delaware Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is conducting a three-year project, titled an Integrated Curriculum Framework in History, Geography, and Civics. Project goals include:

  1. To develop a model statewide curriculum framework for social studies, focusing on history, geography and civics education, in grades K-12.
  2. To develop and implement effective model guidelines for teacher education, certification, and re-certification which are linked to the state curriculum framework.
  3. To design and test a model professional development program for teachers based on the curriculum framework.
  4. To conduct an annual evaluation of the project.

The project has developed a framework document and is in the process of producing student performance standards. The State Board of Education approved the standards framework in June 1995.

During the final year of the project will focus on leadership for frameworks development through working teams of K-12 teachers, a community awareness program to promote the acceptance and adoption of the curriculum framework, using Delaware's electronic network to link teachers and other project participants throughout the state, professional development programs using master teachers, and an innovative approach to certifying and re-certifying social studies teachers.
