The District of Columbia Public Schools State Education Agency is sponsoring systemwide reform of its mathematics/science/technology curriculum by developing a comprehensive curriculum framework, K-12, in the targeted disciplines. The framework will be developed in collaboration with the Division of Curriculum and Instruction (LEA) and operate under the aegis of an Advisory Board comprised of mathematics, science, and technology professionals representing diverse affiliations.

The project will produce a curriculum framework in year one, guidelines for teacher preparation, certification, and recertification in year two, and pilot test a model inservice training program for experienced teachers in mathematics and science in year three. At its inception, the project will sponsor a national symposium entitled "Scientific Literacy for the 21st Century: Implications for Educators" to set the conceptual parameters for the task ahead.
