The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) has embarked upon a project to develop state curriculum framework documents in English language arts and history, a project that will serve a centerpiece for curriculum reform within the school system. The objectives of the project are focused on the design of curriculum framework documents that set forth content standards and performance expectations that will guide instruction, instructional programs, preservice and inservice training, and certification requirements.

Substantial progress has been made in creating the design for the curriculum framework documents and the resource guide that will be the primary products of the project. The design provides writers a clear structure from which to work as they develop content standards and generic performance expectations during the summer of 1995. Writers will include teachers drawn from the newly formed D.C. Area Reading and Writing Collaborative, the DCPS Curriculum Coordinating Council, and other key groups that will receive training in performance task development. The combination of performance-based instruction and standards-based curriculum framework documents strengthens the project and increases the likelihood that the documents will be used in the classroom.
