Arizona is developing a science and mathematics professional guide for grades K-12. Central to the development of the guide will be participation of local school districts and universities in a statewide symposium, regional forums and work teams. The guide will correlate state student outcomes for mathematics and science with national standards and provide guidance for systemic reform.

The project sees systemic reform requiring changes in curriculum, new means of assessment, new methods of teaching, the selection and use of quality instructional materials and changes in teachers, schools, and universities. The professional guide is a necessary resource to systemically implement mathematics and science specialists or curriculum directors with a background in science and mathematics education. The guide will contain sections about policy and practices, curriculum, assessment, and instruction. The guide will be used as a basis for reform of teacher education, certification and recertification.
