Abstract:
Problem Definition. Mainstreaming has spawned a critical loss of teaching resources for braille music. This circumstance impedes full participation in school music programs, hindering literacy and equal access to information.
Objective. Develop and organize a comprehensive, multimedia curriculum for teaching music braille. The system will permit teachers with little or no knowledge of music braille to instruct students in its use. A sighted teacher sees and hears material to be taught while the blind student feels and hears the same material. The sound becomes the common denominator for communicating. The teacher uses what he knows, print notation and musical concepts, to teach what he and his student do not yet know, the expression of these concepts in music braille.
Hardware and software components will be built on the Phase I foundation. Curriculum materials will be published in print and braille. Multimedia content will be presented on one or more touch-sensitive hardware devices via newly developed software functions.
Summary of Anticipated Results and Implications:
Multimedia teaching system for music braille. Market teaching system to schools, training centers and private teachers who serve blind musicians.
