The International Education Exchange Program is reaching a large number of economic educators in post-Soviet countries and eastern Europe. By training teacher trainers and classroom teachers in economics and pedagogy, translating and adapting quality U.S. materials, organizing conferences and study tours, and publishing lessons for U.S. classrooms, the National Council network is helping international partners reform their educational systems.

Since, June 1995, the International Economic Exchange Program has made strong progress in helping partners from seven countries of the former Soviet Union/Eastern Europe to educate their citizens for the transition to a market economy. Two introductory workshops for teachers, three seminars for teacher-trainers, one material development workshop, and two study tours have been conducted to date, and representatives of five countries have participated in the National Council Annual meeting. The activities to date are estimated to impact well over 115,000 students and teachers this year, and the formal evaluation by the Education Development Center, Inc. has shown evidence of increased economic knowledge, teaching skills, and attitudinal changes favorable to market economy. Private funders, including the Amoco Foundation and Soros Foundation have pledged to match U.S. government funds, and all participants in training and exchanges have expressed appreciation for the benefits of the program, which include the development of new teaching materials for U.S. classrooms, new reference materials, and new training models.
