Purpose:The purpose of the Gender Equity Expert Panel was to identify promising and exemplary programs that would enable educators and community members to make better-informed decisions about effective ways to encourage gender equity and counteract gender inequities and discrimination. The Panel was established in 1995 after the Office of Educational Research and Improvement was required by legislation to establish expert panels that would identify exemplary and promising programs in a variety of educational areas. Promising and Exemplary Programs:The 30-member Gender Equity Panel received almost 100 submissions and reviewed them according to previously established guidelines and criteria. On July 16, 2000, 1 exemplary and 10 promising programs were designated based on the Panel's recommendations. Brief descriptions of these programs are listed below. In addition, The U.S. Department of Education's Gender Equity Expert Panel Exemplary and Promising Gender Equity Programs 2000 publication provides summary reviews of these programs, as well as a list of Panel members and the criteria and procedures used.
