Information Items
OERI Assistant Secretary Russ Whitehurst gave an update on Congressional action on the reauthorization of the agency, some of its accomplishments in the past year, including successful competitions, the movement of an evaluation center from the Office of the Under Secretary to OERI, new hires, the FY 2003 budget request, a lecture series on Capitol Hill, and areas of interest for future research.
The Board heard presentations on the work of CPRE, which unites researchers from five of the nation's leading research institutions: the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the goal of improving elementary and secondary education through practical research. CPRE is funded primarily by a grant from the Office of Educational Research and Imiprovement. Presenters were Susan Fuhrman, chair, CPRE Management Committee; Tom Corcoran and Margaret Goertz, both co-directors of CPRE at Penn; Richard Elmore, co-director of CPRE at Harvard; Allan Odden, co-director of CPRE at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Deborah Ball, senior researcher, CPRE, and Brian Rowan, study Director for CPRE's Study of Instructional Improvement.
Frederic (Fritz) Moser gave an introduction to the RAND Project on Program-Centered Research Planning in Education and the recent report, Achievement for All , issued by its Mathematics Study Panel. The study was funded by OERI. Deborah Ball, who chaired the study group, led the discussion with the Board members on the findings of the panel as outlined in the report.
Rafael Valdivieso gave the executive director's report.
Action Items
The Board approved the minutes of its last meeting, February 1, 2002.
The Board approved the following meeting dates for FY 2003:
January 10; April 11; June 13; and September 12.
The Board gave to its executive director, Ray Valdivieso, a performance rating of outstanding for the period July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. The Board recommended an award of $5000 in recognition of his exceptionally effective service to the organization and its mission.
