What Is Cooperative Publishing?

Cooperative publishing is a partnership between OERI and another organization to achieve broad dissemination of OERI research-based materials. Since all federal government publications are in the public domain, without copyright, no royalties are involved. Anyone can reprint the material in whole or in part. A company or organization can add its name and logo to a publication and use the pub for the benefit of the organization. Also, the MIS staff can work with you to develop, print, distribute, or promote a publication.

Benefits To Partners

Here's what you can gain by publishing jointly with the Office of Educational Research and Improvement:

  • National promotion of your name connected with the Department of Education on a widely disseminated publication;
  • Increased overall public awareness of your organization and its public services;
  • Wide distribution of an educational publication with your name on it;
  • Media and public recognition of your efforts to improve education through a partnership with the U.S. Government; and
  • Access to research-based educational publications.

Successful Cooperative Publishing Partnerships

  • Houghton Mifflin/D.C. Heath offers ED's Helping Your Child series as part of the Whole Village - a multimedia package for educators on building partnerships among schools, homes, and communities.
  • The American Federation of Teachers has reprinted selected titles of the Helping Your Child series, making them available to educators at cost.
  • The South Carolina Department of Education has reprinted Helping Your Child Learn Responsible Behavior for distribution at parent involvement conferences throughout the state.
