A r c h i v e d I n f o r m a t i o nComputer Donation ProgramThis program is now available at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/om/programs/index.html.
The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) administers a computer donation program to assist schools and non-profit organizations in acquiring information technology. Since the program began, thousands of pieces of computer equipment have been donated. Items such as computers and printers are available, with priority being
given to those institutions in enterprise communities and empowerment zones.
Department of Education (ED) principal offices may identify eligible schools and non-profit organizations via the Computers for Learning Web site.
ED volunteers may assist teachers in installing and using these assets and connecting their institutions to the Internet. Principal offices also qualify ED volunteers and authorize administrative leave, where appropriate. Principal offices coordinate with OCIO to ensure that one office does not donate computer assets that could be better utilized within the agency. The Computers for Learning Web site, administered by the Department of Energy, offers more information on this federal initiative and the opportunity to register to participate via the Web.
