Short TakeCheck Other Calendars

Microsoft Outlook offers a convenient calendar feature that you can use to manage your schedule.

Many employees at the Department have assistants who manage their schedules on their behalf, while some people need to access the calendars of other employees to check their availability. Fortunately, Outlook offers easy-to-use options that allow you to permit other users to access your calendar.

Short TakeFive Worst Security Mistakes

We at the Department are making great strides in our awareness of computer security. However, we still make some common security mistakes (listed below) that could allow intruders to enter our system.

  1. Installing screen savers or games from unknown sources. Such software could have a virus or other malicious program written into it.
  2. Opening e-mail attachments from unknown sources. If you receive an unexpected e-mail attachment from someone you don't know, do not open it. It could contain a virus.
  3. Failing to install security patches. If you use software for special applications, you must install any security patch that the manufacturer issues so that the software remains current.
  4. Using a modem while you're connected to the network. If you use a modem, you are bypassing the Depart-ment's firewall and all the other security features built into ED's network. A virus could penetrate your desktop computer, and from there, enter the entire network.
  5. Failing to make and test backups. Everyone should keep backup copies of their important drafts and final documents on a diskette. If you use special applications or a laptop computer, be sure you also make backups of the latest version of your software, including any patches.
