Hoax viruses are e-mail messages sent to you by well-intentioned friends and coworkers. The messages warn you of viruses that are spreading around the online community and how to avoid infecting your machine with malicious programs. These e-mail messages sound so convincing that you may in turn send the message to all your friends, family members, and coworkers. How do you know the difference between a real computer virus and a hoax virus? Unless you know more than the average computer user, you would find it difficult to tell whether the messages refer to real viruses or not. Most important, you must remember: Do not forward these e-mail warning messages. Second, visit one of the Web sites below for information on hoax viruses and actual threats.
Our purpose is to communicate the IT events that affect your work. These are exciting times for OCIO, and our name should reflect this. Send your suggestions via e-mail to OCIO@ed.gov. |
