EUGENE E. GARCIA

DIRECTOR OF BILINGUAL EDUCATION AND MINORITY LANGUAGES AFFAIRS

Eugene E. Garcia is the director of bilingual education and minority languages affairs. His appointment was announced on September 7, 1993.

Prior to joining the Department, Garcia was a professor of education and psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he also served as the dean of the division of social sciences. In 1990, Garcia became the co-director of the National Center for Research on Cultural Diversity and Second Language Learning, a U.S. Department of Education National Center.

From 1980 to 1987, Garcia was a professor of education at Arizona State University and also director of the Center for Bilingual/Bicultural Education. Garcia was named U.S. Hispanic educator of the year in 1986 by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).

Formerly, Garcia was associate professor of psychology and chaired the department of Chicano studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara from 1976 to 1980. He also served as an assistant professor at the University of Utah from 1972 to 1976.

Garcia is the recipient of many awards and has authored numerous articles and books on linguistic development and cultural diversity.

Garcia holds a B.S. from University of Utah (1968), an M.A. from the University of Kansas (1970), and a Ph.D. in human development from the University of Kansas (1972). He has also completed post doctoral work at Harvard University and served as a National Research Council and Kellogg National Fellow.

Garcia is married and has two children.
