Shayam K. Menon is the director of the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (CFBCI) at the U.S. Department of Education. In his role as director, Menon is strengthening the role of faith-based and community organizations in addressing the nation's social problems. The Department's CFBCI works closely with the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which was created by President Bush in 2001.

Prior to joining the Department, Menon was a partner with Hoxton Financial LLC in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and a principal with The Willard Group of Washington, D.C., for two years. In addition, Menon was an attorney with Krooth and Altman LP in Washington, D.C., for six years.

In 1996, Menon was appointed by Gov. George Allen (R-Va.) and reappointed in 1997 by Gov. James Gilmore (R-Va.) to serve on the board of trustees of the Family and Children's Trust Fund of Virginia, which supports services for the prevention and treatment of violence in families. He served as chairman in 1999 and remained on the board until 2002.

Menon earned his B.S. degree in business administration from Washington & Lee University in 1987 and his J.D. degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in 1991.

He is involved in civic activities in Falls Church, Va., where he lives with his wife, Anita, and sons, Vijay, Kiran and Neil.
