Almost 700 educators and other officials from 46 states and territories are expected for Wednesday's National High School Leadership Summit in Washington where they will examine the strengths and shortcomings of America's high schools and identify solutions to help assure that the nation's youth receive a quality education that fully prepares them for the future.
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige will announce a new initiative to help states and local districts improve their high schools, as part of the one-day, invitational event to be held at the Hilton Washington and Towers.
Paige will lead a variety of national education experts at the conference, designed to raise awareness of the state of American high schools and promote a more promising future for our high school students and graduates. Speakers and associated publications will focus on four themes:
Setting high expectations and accountability for results;
Creating options and engaging students;
Fostering world-quality teaching and school leadership; and
Making smooth transitions into postsecondary education, training, and careers.
Education practitioners, policymakers and government officials will be among those gathered to address the solutions and next steps needed to tackle these issues. Issue papers will be produced to coincide with the four themes of the summit.
In addition, a new dedicated section of the Department of Education Web site will feature information on the summit, as well as programs and legislation affecting the high school community. Beginning Wednesday, the site can be viewed at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ovae/pi/hsinit/index.html.
Paige will deliver the morning's keynote address shortly after 9 a.m. at the hotel's exhibit hall-concourse level. His speech is entitled, "Preparing America's Future: Challenges, Issues, and Possibilities For America's High Schools and American Youth."
Throughout the day, panels and breakout sessions will use the framework of the education reform No Child Left Behind Act to promote a national dialogue about transforming America's high schools.
