The president today nominated Raymond Simon, of Arkansas, to be assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education at the U.S. Department of Education.
Mr. Simon currently serves as director of the Arkansas Department of Education. He previously served as assistant superintendent for finance and the superintendent for Conway Public Schools in Conway, Ark. Mr. Simon is a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas, where he went on to earn a master's degree.
Regarding the appointment, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said: "I've known Ray Simon for many years. He's a first-rate educator who'll bring to this critical job the perspectives of a leader who has managed large organizations and who, like me, is deeply committed to making sure every child in America receives a quality education. He will help us continue the remarkable progress we've made in implementing the historic No Child Left Behind Act. He will be a tremendous addition to our team, and I look forward to welcoming him aboard."
