The Commission on Opportunity in Athletics co-chairs Ted Leland and Cynthia Cooper today released the following statement:

"This week, the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics will meet to review and approve its final report.  Next month, we will provide Secretary Paige with our findings and recommendations. It will be up to the Secretary after thorough review to determine which, if any, recommendations he will implement.

"The commission is an important first step in a long public discussion about how we can make the law better. Secretary Paige appointed the commission to examine ways to strengthen enforcement, expand opportunities and ensure fairness for all college and interscholastic athletes. The report we are assembling will enable the Secretary to do that.

"Any reasonable person who attended the commission meetings knows that our process was open, fair and inclusive. The commission was very careful to invite witnesses representing all points of view. At four town hall hearings, we listened to dozens of expert witnesses and hundreds of citizens. This process enabled us to gather the information we need to prepare our report.

"As the commission concludes its work, we hope all advocates and observers will remember that fair play and opportunity for all form the heart of Title IX."
