U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today released the following statement regarding the House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Education Reform IDEA Input Website:

"I would like to commend U.S. Reps. John Boehner and Mike Castle for their leadership and support of the president's education agenda to ensure that no child is left behind.

"I am pleased with the progress that has been made so far with the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act, and I look forward to working with the House Education and Workforce Committee on the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

"The department has spent a significant amount of time soliciting input on the challenges facing our students with disabilities and their families. Robert Pasternack, our assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services, has met with thousands of people, and our Federal Register notice generated hundreds of comments on how the special education law could be improved. This information has been invaluable to us as we begin the process of preparing for the reauthorization of the IDEA.

"I am looking forward to reviewing the report of the President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education. These experts have come together and are nearing completion of their important report that will inform the administration's thoughts on the reauthorization of the IDEA, and I am confident that they will help lay the foundation for reforming this important law.

"I am encouraged that the Subcommittee on Education Reform is soliciting public input on the needed changes within the IDEA. From my experience in working with the committee, I know that its members are dedicated to improving our public education systems, especially for students with disabilities.

"I encourage all those affected by the IDEA to provide their input so that their voices continue to be heard on this important law as we ensure that no child with disabilities is left behind."
