U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today announced that Susan Bonesteel will serve as the secretary's regional representative for Region VI. With headquarters in Dallas, Region VI includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The U.S. Department of Education maintains 10 regional offices throughout the country to represent department programs and interests.
"Susan has worked in education throughout her career and is a welcome addition to our team," Paige said. "She has joined us at a very exciting time and I look forward to her assistance as we implement President Bush's education agenda, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001."
As the secretary's regional representative, Bonesteel will serve as the department's liaison to state and local education agencies, public and private schools, colleges and universities and elected representatives of local and state government organizations. In addition, Bonesteel will help disseminate information about department programs and initiatives to key constituency groups including parents, members of the business community, and civic leaders.
Prior to joining the department, Bonesteel served as the executive director of the Texas Education Reform Caucus from 2000 to 2002. In addition, Bonesteel served as the executive director of the Texas Public Education Reform Foundation since 2001. From 1996 to 1998, Bonesteel directed career and technology education for the Arlington (Texas) Independent School District and served as coordinator of Tech Prep Program Development at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth from 1993 to 1996. From 1988 to 1990, she was an adjunct professor for graduate teacher education in the vocational and technology education degree program at the University of North Texas at Denton.
Bonesteel received a master of education degree in vocational education from the University of North Texas at Denton in 1989. She was awarded a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984.
