The White House Office of the Press Secretary today made the following announcement:

The President intends to nominate Laurie Rich to be Assistant Secretary of Education for Intergovernmental and Interagency Affairs. She has served as Executive Director of the Texas Office of State-Federal Relations in Washington, D.C., since 1995. From 1985 to 1995, she served in the office of Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, as a Special Assistant and Senior Legislative Assistant. Rich is a former secondary school teacher and is a graduate of North Texas State University.

Regarding President Bush's selection of Rich for the position, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said: "Laurie Rich will be an excellent addition to the leadership of this department. Her experiences in education and in government service will be an important resource as we move ahead to put our No Child Left Behind plan for reforming education into action in schools, districts and states around the country."
