U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and senior staff at the Department of Education will wrap up the 2012 back-to-school bus tour with a rally on Friday, Sept. 21 on the plaza at the Department's headquarters building in Washington, D.C.
The tour will kick off on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Redwood City, Calif., and continue with a series of more than 100 events that cover topics ranging from early learning to workforce development. Secretary Duncan, senior education officials, and special guests will engage with communities large and small from coast to coast, promoting the theme that Education Drives America.
This is the third annual back-to-school bus tour for Secretary Duncan and the Department of Education. In addition to Redwood City and Washington, D.C., additional stops on the tour include Sacramento, Calif.; Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko, Nev.; Salt Lake City; Rawlins, Rock Springs, and Cheyenne, Wyo.; Denver, Colorado Springs, and Limon, Colo.; Topeka and Emporia, Kan.; Columbia, Kansas City, and St. Louis, Mo.; Mt. Vernon, Ill.; Evansville, Ind.; Lexington, Ky.; Charleston and McDowell County, W.Va.; and Roanoke and Richmond, Va.
In 2010, the back-to-school bus tour included the Delta region in the South and the Northeast. In 2011, the tour covered the Midwest from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin.
"In the past three years, I've traveled to 47 states, visited hundreds of schools and met with thousands of teachers, parents and students who are finding new and innovative ways to teach and learn," Secretary Duncan said. "These tours enable us to highlight what's working and create momentum for education reforms that improve the lives of all students."
