As part of the U.S. Department of Education’s third annual back-to-school bus tour, on Wednesday, Sept. 19, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller and Sue Liu, special assistant for community colleges in the Office of Vocational and Adult Education, will travel to Continental Tire’s production facility in Mount Vernon, Ill., where they will tour the facility and lead a roundtable discussion with representatives from the company, Rend Lake College, and other local business and education leaders. The discussion will focus on partnerships that have been forged among community colleges, businesses, and industry in the area and the connection between education and jobs.
“America’s future is directly linked to the quality of education that we provide our children, young people and adults,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who will begin the bus tour on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Redwood City, Calif. “Education is the key to a vibrant middle class, strong national security and our global economic competitiveness.”
Secretary Duncan and his senior leaders are crisscrossing the country from Sept. 12-21, leading a series of events that push the message that Education Drives America. Besides Mount Vernon, some of the other stops include Sacramento, Calif.; Reno, Nev.; Salt Lake City; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Denver; Topeka, Kan.; Kansas City, Mo.; Evansville, Ind.; Lexington, Ky.; Charleston, W.Va.; Roanoke, Va.; Richmond, Va.; and Washington, D.C.
Prior to the tour and discussion at Continental Tire, Liu will travel to Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill., where she will tour the campus and discuss ways to help students succeed in college and careers through morning sessions with faculty and undergraduates. Liu also will lead a discussion with local school district superintendents about creating a college-bound culture for K-12 students.
