U.S. Department of Education Awards $23 Million to Support Graduate Students

October 14, 2015

The U.S. Department of Education announced the award of more than $23 million under the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program that will help provide fellowships, through academic departments and programs at institutions of higher education.

"These grants will help higher education institutions in hiring quality graduate students who can continue teaching and researching in areas of national need, such as the sciences, foreign languages and education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "This will help ensure that top graduate students with financial need get the opportunity to pursue a graduate education they deserve and will help our country stay competitive in today's global economy."

GAANN grantees serve graduate students of superior ability and financial need who are pursuing terminal degrees in areas of national need, including: ethnic, and cultural studies; biological sciences/life sciences; chemistry; computer and information sciences; educational evaluation, research, and statistics; engineering; foreign languages; mathematics; nursing; physics; and psychology.

The three-year grants include institutional payments and stipends. The institutional payment is used to cover tuition and fee expenses. The stipend is based upon the students' demonstrated financial need as determined under Title IV, Part F of the Higher Education Act and used to cover students' living expenses.
