Education and Justice Departments Announce New Research Showing Prison Education Reduces Recidivism, Saves Money, Improves Employment

Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced research findings showing that, on average, inmates who participated in correctional education programs had 43 percent lower odds of returning to prison than inmates who did not.

U.S. Department of Education Announces "Strong Start, Bright Future" Back-to-School Bus Tour with Stops Around the Southwest

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and senior Department officials will visit states throughout the Southwest for "Strong Start, Bright Future," the Department's annual back-to-school bus tour from Monday, Sept. 9, to Friday, Sept. 13. The tour will kick off in New Mexico before heading to Texas, Arizona, and California.

U.S. Department of Education Awards $12.3 Million in Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Grants

The U.S. Department of Education awarded $12.3 million to 35 schools districts in 17 states across the country to establish or expand counseling programs. Grantees will use funds to support counseling programs in targeted elementary schools.

Obama Administration Approves NCLB Waiver Request for California CORE Districts

The Obama administration today approved eight California school districts (Fresno Unified, Long Beach Unified, Los Angeles Unified, Oakland Unified, Sacramento City Unified, San Francisco Unified, Sanger Unified, and Santa Ana Unified) for a one year district waiver from No Child Left Behind (NCLB), in exchange for locally developed plans to prepare all students for college and career, focus aid on the neediest students, and support effective teaching and leadership. These eight districts submitted a joint request for waivers as part of the California Office to Reform Education (CORE).
