Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Waldo to Visit Colorado Springs as Part of 2012 Cross-Country Back-To-School Bus Tour Promoting Education

As part of the U.S. Department of Education’s third annual back-to-school bus tour, Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Waldo will travel to Colorado on Tuesday, Sept. 18 to visit Fountain-Fort Carson High School and the Troops to Teachers office in Colorado Springs.

“America’s future is directly linked to the quality of education that we provide our children, young people and adults,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who will begin the tour on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Redwood City, Calif. “This bus tour is an opportunity to highlight what’s working and create momentum for education reforms that improve the lives of all students.”

Secretary Duncan and his leadership team will crisscross the country from Sept. 12-21 for a series of events highlighting the theme that Education Drives America. Besides Colorado Springs, some of the other stops include Sacramento, Calif.; Reno, Nev.; Salt Lake City; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Denver; Topeka, Kan.; Kansas City, Mo.; St. Louis; Evansville, Ind.; Lexington, Ky.; Charleston, W.Va.; Roanoke, Va.; Richmond, Va.; and Washington, D.C.

Waldo will kick off his bus tour stop with a tour of Fountain-Fort Carson High School and a roundtable with military families on issues that affect military-connected families, including college access and affordability. Expected participants include students, family members, teachers, and administrators.

Afterward, Waldo will visit the Troops to Teachers Colorado Springs office and meet with military veterans who have begun a new career in the teaching profession. They will join community leaders for a roundtable discussion on recruiting, training, and retaining a strong 21st century teaching force.

The Department’s Office for Military Families and Veterans is charged with identifying the unique educational needs of our nation’s service members and their children, and with fulfilling the commitments outlined in the Obama Administration’s Strengthening Our Military Families report. As a liaison to the office, Waldo has visited more than a half dozen military bases in the U.S. and abroad to discuss federal education priorities and support for military families.
