Community College Working Group Held
OVAE sponsored a working group of Community College Presidents on January 16 in Washington, DC. Attendees focused on issues and opportunities that affect the community college mission. The 15 Presidents interacted on the impact of existing or proposed federal policies concerning reauthorization of Perkins and the Higher Education Act; and programs for students with disabilities in the community colleges and remedial/developmental education. These informal discussions serve as a conduit among community college leaders, researchers and policymakers.

CTE Week in February
The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE)'s Career and Technical Education Week will be held nationwide February 9-15. Assistant Secretary Carol D'Amico will spend a portion of the week in Pennsylvania performing site visits and speeches on the future of career and technical education.

Why Are Students Enrolling in Community Colleges?
Most incoming two-year college students enroll with the goal of transferring to a four-year college, according to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics. Thirty-eight percent intend to transfer, making these students less likely to leave school without obtaining their goal. Twenty-two percent reported the intent of earning a degree or certificate, 22 percent for job skills, 16 percent for personal enrichment, and 3 percent for other reasons. Short-Term Enrollment in Postsecondary Education is based on the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, which surveyed students who began higher education in the 1995-96 academic year.
