"Ohio County Schools received state recognition Monday for achievement under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. During a regular meeting of the Ohio County Board of Education, West Virginia State Superintendent of Schools David Stewart visited and congratulated the board members, administrators, teachers, parents and students as part of the West Virginia Achieves Recognition Tour. ‘West Virginia Achieves is what we expect of our students - achievement,’ Stewart noted. ‘We want children to achieve and reach their greatest potential. The statewide recognition tour is our way of celebrating school success.’

"Within Ohio County, 12 of 13 schools met one or more of the following requirements:

• Adequate Yearly Progress in student academic achievement as defined by the state’s No Child Left Behind criteria.
• ‘Best Among Peers,’ which means the school‘s students attained among the highest scores in the group of schools in the state, comparable to the size of the student body.
• At least 40 percent of its students scored at the ‘above mastery’ or ‘distinguished’ levels on the West Virginia Education Standards Test, more commonly known as the WESTEST, in either reading or math.
• Best in closing the achievement gap in reading or math for one of these sub-groups: African-American, Hispanic, low socio-economic status or special education."
