U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will keynote the North Carolina Central University HBCU Symposium, titled Setting the Agenda for HBCUs, Thursday morning. At the symposium, Secretary Duncan will discuss the continuing importance and vitality of HBCUs, and the role they can play in boosting graduation rates and preparing minority students to become teachers. The symposium will focus on transformational leadership and accountability, student success and access, diversification of the curriculum, community engagement, and comprehensive funding approaches.
In the afternoon, Secretary Duncan will visit Southern High School where he will meet with student leaders and hold a panel on teachers’ jobs with Governor Bev Perdue, Congressman Bob Etheridge and Durham County School Board Chair Minnie Forte-Brown. During the panel, Secretary Duncan will highlight the positive impact of ARRA funding in North Carolina and the need for emergency funding to save education jobs. In 2009-2010, ARRA funds supported 241 jobs in Durham, 80 jobs in Chapel Hill-Carrboro, and a total of 1,243 jobs in Wake County. In recent weeks, Secretary Duncan has urged Congress to approve an additional $23 billion in emergency support to preserve education jobs. According to a report by the White House Council of Economic Advisors, emergency funds could save more than 10,000 education jobs in North Carolina.
Following the panel, Secretary Duncan will hold a brief media avail in Southern High School’s Media Center from 12:15-12:30 p.m. EDT.
