U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will join the National Education Association (NEA) President Dennis Van Roekel in celebrating teachers during American Education Week. They will visit Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., on Thursday, Nov. 18, to meet with teachers and congratulate them on their hard work, as well as tour several classrooms and hold a media availability.

“I am honored to join the NEA this week in celebrating our nation’s teachers during American Education Week,” Secretary Duncan said. “With more than a million teachers expected to retire in the coming years, we have an historic opportunity to transform public education in America by calling on a new generation to join those already in the classroom. We are working with the broader education community to strengthen and elevate the entire teaching profession so that every teacher has the support and training they need to succeed.”

In September, the U.S. Department of Education launched its TEACH campaign to encourage Americans, especially minorities, to pursue careers in teaching. To learn more about the TEACH campaign and to view public service announcements (PSAs) by celebrities, Administration officials and local leaders, visit The site provides information and resources for students and prospective teachers—including a new interactive “pathway to teaching” tool designed to help individuals chart their course to becoming a teacher.
