U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Denver, Colo., on Friday, July 19 where he will spotlight preschool for all, college affordability, education reform and issues affecting the Hispanic community.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia, U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet and Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey will each be on hand for at least one of the day’s events.

At 12:55 p.m., Duncan will join Lt. Gov. Garcia, District Attorney Morrissey and others for a town hall meeting on the importance of expanding preschool to give more students a strong start. A press conference will follow at Clayton Educare School, 3751 Martin Luther King Blvd.

The event is one of a series of activities that the Secretary has hosted across the country to draw attention to President Obama’s proposal to dramatically expand funding for high-quality early learning programs. The President, in an effort to help all children begin school on a level playing field, put forward in his 2014 budget request an historic new investment in early learning that would make preschool available to all 4-year-olds from low- to moderate-income families; expand evidence-based, home-visiting services for vulnerable families and children; and support quality improvements through a new Early Head Start-Child Care partnership.

At 3:25 p.m., Duncan, Gov. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet and Lt. Gov. Garcia will host a town hall on college affordability and issues affecting the Hispanic community. A press availability will follow at Escuela Tlatelolco, 2949 N. Federal Blvd.

That evening at 6 p.m., the secretary will participate at Biennial of the Americas, discussing the symposium’s theme of the day, "Reinventing Education for the Global Market." The festival at Denver’s Buell Theater will bring together officials from throughout the Western Hemisphere to discuss significant issues impacting life in the Americas.
